At the recent iPad keynote, Tim Cook revealed the “resolutionary” iPad. But he also revealed the new Apple TV 3. The update is actually a major update but not nearly as major as I would have liked. What’s new in this update? Let’s review what’s new and what it means for Apple’s TV future.
1080p, finally 1080p- Sorry Apple but it’s about time. Finally I can watch my videos in full 1080p. This will mean my videos, YouTube, AirPlay, Movies, TV Shows and even Music will come in clearer than before. Thank you Apple!!
AirPlay- This feature is nothing new but it has been modified. Instead of mirroring the iPad screen and having it show on the iPad as well (what’s on the iPad is on the screen), it has a dual screen, with the actual screen on the TV and a sort of controller on the iPad. You should see it on the Apple site, it looks cleaner than it did before.
Speed- Apple always updates the guts of its devices so expect the TV to be faster.
While these features are great, they are minimal to what I expected. Apple TV 3 is not a big update to its predecessor. So what are Apple’s plans after this? If Apple too late in the game? Will they do anything in the TV field other than Apple TV 3?
Yes, Apple will continue on its TV hopes, it will continue it because Steve Jobs said he had cracked it and I know Apple will do everything it can to make it into the living room. Apple, depending on when they will release a serious product in TVs (remember Apple TV is a “hobby”), can get into the game on time. Samsung has a smart TV out their already but it’s a flop, saw a commercial for it once, never saw or heard from it again. So Apple is not too late and it still has a chance. However, in order to do this it needs to release it soon. I predict that Apple just wanted current Apple TV 2 users to get the Apple TV 3 so they can have 1080p. I also predict that Apple will release it’s non-hobby TV at the the end of 2012 or the beginning of 2013, with the latter a lot more likely. The Apple TV will die out when the “iTV” comes out. It will replace it as Apple’s only TV product. Apple TV features wont disappear though. They’ll be put In with a lot other features as well. I can almost guarantee you without a doubt, the TV is the next product Apple will revolutionize. I’m sorry, but the Apple TV won’t do it. But the rumored “iTV” will. We will have to see what Apple does in the year to come.
