Have we reached the end of the cats? Now correct me if I’m wrong, but is it possible that Apple has used up almost all of the wild cats they could (with the exception of Cougar, which is actually a Mountain Lion and a Puma, and a Panther, all of which are OS X releases, and Ocelot, which I doubt Apple using since its just not catchy). I think it’s time to give that particular animal a break. So cross out Cougar, whats next? I can’t really think of any cats to use for the next one. Using Cougar would be the fourth of the same animal, and the only reason they are using “Mountain Lion” is because it goes along with Lion. After Lion was released, we couldn’t possibly think of the next one. With Mountain Lion, Apple only brought back an animal they used twice before. Now, we are really stumped. What could they possibly use? Clouded Leopard? Maybe, but I think the leopard name should end. Actually I think the whole cat name scheme should end. It’s time to drop it Apple
If Apple is to drop the cat scheme, what are they going to call it? If they are to follow a word scheme to describe OS releases, they should go with what? Planets, something to do with mythology, OS X Apollo sounds good actually. That could work. OS X Mercury. Nah. Wild dogs? OS X Coyote, OS X Wolf? Nah. Personally, I think Apple should drop the naming scheme entirely and just call it OS X (Ten) point whatever. For example, instead of say OS X Mountain Lion, they would instead say OS 10.8. Apple has had success with something like this before. Look at iOS. iOS is just known as iOS 5 or iOS 6 or whatever. People do put 5.x.x but not too often. Perhaps once we go to OS XI, instead of OS 11.0 to 11.1, 11.0 will immediately be followed by OS 12.0. Who knows? No one knows how Apple’s naming scheme will go in the future, but one things for certain, the wild cats have been depleted (unless they want to use Ocelot or Cougar, which neither sound particularly catchy). Let’s see what Apple does next year when OS 10.9 is due, perhaps then they will change the naming scheme. I can’t wait to see what naming scheme will come next. What do you think?
