The upcoming iMac 2012 has been a topic brought up more and more lately with an entirely new Mac line coming, starting with the MacBook Pros next week at WWDC, MacBook Air later this year, Mac Pro at some point this year (maybe), the Mac minis coming sooner than later, and the topic of this article, the iMac coming possibly at WWDC next week along side it’s portable brother. So what can we expect from these beauties of computers? What specs will they have and what new features will it have.
Mac OS X Mountain Lion- The new OS will be featured on the new iMacs (of course all of them will at some point). However, I think that the iMac will come with it right out of the box. To read more about the new OS, please view my article on the new OS. It is the one that will face horrors of Windows 8. It should do insanely great compared to that horrible excuse of an OS.
Ivy Bridge- Of course, this ones obvious. Intel’s third generation chipset aka the Ivy Bridge processors are faster, provide better graphics, and an overall better experience as it should. Benchmarks of both the iMac and MacBook Pro have been leaked, if they are to be believed then the new models will be about 10% faster than the older models.
USB 3.0- Since Ivy Bridge has support for USB 3.0, then why wouldn’t Apple put it in? Don’t worry, I’m not alluding to the fact that they’re not putting them in, I’m alluding to the fact that they ARE putting them in. USB 3.0 is going to be quite a bit faster than its older brother USB 2.0. USB 3.0 is 10 times faster than 2.0. Now that’s a big difference!
Retina Display- Rumors have been floating around that both the new MBPs and iMacs will feature Retina Displays. While I feel it is unlikely Apple will try for the Retina Display in the new MBPs (remember Batterygate with the new iPads?) (But dont worry MBP 2012 buyers, Apple will put a higher resolution on the screen) I do feel it is likely Apple will include Retina Displays in the new iMacs. With such a beautiful screen on a big iMac, what wouldn’t there be to love? I mean weight doesn’t matter much should they have to make it heavier since you’re not going to carry it around much. If a power outlet can support the screens now, I’m sure they can support Retina Displays too. Expect Apple to make the screens anti-glare as well.
Release date?- I believe that it is possible Apple will talk about the new iMacs at WWDC along with the new MBPs , however since the price on the current iMacs haven’t dropped yet, that might not necessarily be true. Regardless, should it happen at WWDC along with the sure arrival of the MBP, then I expect Apple will release it about a week or two later, as they do with most products, especially in recent years.
More out-of-the-box RAM- That’s right! You read it right! Apple will put more standard RAM into their devices in order to make them even faster right out of the box.
There you have it, a collection of features likely to be in the new iMacs. If you have any additional information or ideas about what to include on the new iMac, please feel free to comment.
