Apple says iPhone driver’s licenses and state IDs are coming to seven more U.S. states. Translation, more people are going to be able to tap their iPhone or Apple Watch and prove who they are, without doing the classic panic shuffle through a stuffed wallet.
If you have ever fumbled your ID at an airport while holding a coffee, a bag, and your dignity by a thread, you already understand the vibe here. Digital ID in Wallet is one of those “why wasn’t this a thing years ago” features, when it works smoothly.
My take, this is Apple doing the slow, steady “we’re going to make the old way feel ridiculous” rollout. Not everyone will get it at once, and it depends on where you live, but the direction is clear.
Also, yes, I am absolutely looking forward to the first time someone says “license and registration,” and I get to do it with my watch like I’m in a sci-fi movie. Politely, of course.
