Oh, Apple. Just when you think iOS is all about shiny new features and camera upgrades, they drop a very “grown-up” update that still affects basically everything.
On December 17, 2025, Apple announced changes to iOS in Japan to comply with the Mobile Software Competition Act (MSCA). The headline, developers will get new options to distribute apps through alternative app marketplaces, and to process payments for digital goods outside of Apple In-App Purchase.
But because it’s Apple, this isn’t a simple “sure, do whatever” situation. They’re adding protections like Notarization for iOS apps, an authorization process for marketplaces, and extra guardrails aimed at reducing scams, fraud, malware, and the general chaos that comes with opening more doors.
Here’s the part I find interesting, Apple is basically saying “we’ll comply, but we’re not turning iOS into the Wild West.” And honestly, I get it. I like choice, but I also like not having my aunt accidentally installing ‘Free iPhone Cleaner 2026’ and then texting me at 2 a.m.
If you’re a developer, this is a big deal. If you’re a regular user, it’s still a big deal, because changes to app distribution and payments always ripple into what apps show up, how they monetize, and how safe the whole ecosystem feels.
